Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son; and as he died, he said, “The Lord look on it, and repay!” 2 Chr 24:22
Zachariah was the son of Jehoiada the priest. His prophesy was not heeded by King Joash. Instead, he was put to death. In the face of this, he did not retaliate and seek revenge on his own. His response was simply “…Lord look on it, and repay!”.
We are often tempted to repay evil for evil. But the LORD says “Vengeance is mine. I will recompense”. Hence, we ought to leave things to God’s righteous judgement and not undertake to vindicate ourselves. If we do, we are telling the world that we do not believe in God’s sovereignty and therefore have to take things into our own hands. Let us be conscious of the testimony we bear and leave things to our God who reigns on the throne in heaven.
