Men of Tyre dwelt there also, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and sold them on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day? Did not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” Neh 13:16-18
Observe the care and concern Nehemiah had for what ought not be done on the Lord’s day. He was firm and unapologetic when addressing how the people misused the Lord’s day. The Lord’s day should be used for activities that would draw us near to God, that magnify His name and remind us about his goodness. It is a day that should be a reminder of the salvation rest we have in Jesus Christ. Anything that has bearing towards this is what we should be spending our time on.
