Job 2:13 – Sitting with a friend in trouble…

So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great. – Job 2:13

Sometimes, being a good friend doesn’t require us to do anything. We just need to be there when our friends need us. We just need to be provide the assurance that we are there to listen to them and render assistance when they ask for it.

Job’s friends’ most effective encouragement for Job is probably during this period of 7 days & 7 nights when they did not say anything. The moment they spoke – no matter how philosophically sound their reasoning is, their words only brought more pain to Job and more wrath for themselves.

The next time you try to encourage a friend, remember – your presence may be more helpful than your words!
